At Harbour Hill Retirement Community, summer is a season to enjoy—whether it’s relaxing on the patio, visiting the beach, or spending time with friends at a community BBQ. After a long winter, the heat of the sun is welcomed and the white fluffy clouds are welcomed sights. But with rising temperatures, it’s important to keep your health top of mind.

As we age, we are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, but with a few simple habits and smart decisions, you can enjoy everything summer has to offer—without the worry of heat exhaustion dampening your spirits!

It’s important to know the signs of heat exhaustion. Early signs include heavy sweating, increased thirst, weakness, extreme tiredness, and possible muscle cramps, nausea, or vomiting. Other indicators can be a rapid or weak pulse, cool and clammy skin, headache, dizziness or fainting, and a rise in body temperature.

Staying Cool in the Heat

  • The warmer it gets, the more important it becomes to plan your days with comfort and safety in mind.
  • Dress in loose-fitting, breathable fabrics in light colours. Clothing with SPF ratings made of fabrics designed to withstand UV rays is now readily available in stores and on line.
  • Schedule outdoor activities during the morning or late afternoon, and avoid extended periods for tasks, such as gardening, between 11-3 if possible.
  • Look for shade or use a sun umbrella and wide brimmed hat or visor if you’ll be outside for an extended time.

Drink Water Often, Not Just When You’re Thirsty

  • Dehydration is a common summer risk that can be easily avoided with a little extra attention.
  • Carry a water bottle with you, even for short outings.
  • Infuse your water with lemon, cucumber, or mint for a refreshing boost.
  • Snack on hydrating foods like melon, grapes, or citrus.

What to Pack for a Perfect Summer Day

Heading out for a day at the beach or an afternoon in the park? A well-packed tote bag will help you enjoy the day, comfortably.

Include:

  • A wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and reapply as needed.
  • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • Light snacks like fruit, crackers, or a small granola bar.
  • Sunglasses for eye protection from strong UV rays.

Summer Activities Made Comfortable

It’s important to let your family and friends know if you have experienced heat exhaustion or heat stroke before, and what your early symptoms look and feel like. We want you to enjoy the summer fun!

From Harbour Hill’s BBQs, shady retreats and garden walks to beach visits and live music on the patio, there are plenty of ways to take part in the season’s festivities. We’ll look out for you, so all you have to do is enjoy your time, but it’s essential to listen to your body and take breaks when needed.

  • Cool off indoors or in shaded areas throughout the day.
  • Choose lighter meals that help you stay energized without overheating.
  • Watch for signs like fatigue or lightheadedness—it’s your body’s way of saying it’s time to sit down, rest and rehydrate.
